Jonathon Naylor Editor Despite a flu bug that cost them nearly a third of their roster, the Creighton Kodiaks girls basketball team managed a respectable finish at a recent tournament. The Kodiaks placed fourth out of eight teams at an invitational tournament held the weekend of Jan. 13 in Langham, Saskatchewan. Only seven of of 10 girls made the trip, a disadvantage that showed in the team's performance. 'We were playing a pretty short bench,' said coach Ryan Trumbley. Nonetheless, the Kodiaks won their first game against Lashburn by 10 points, putting them in the A side semi-final. They then lost to Wilkie by seven points in a game where Trumbley saw the girls 'run out of gas a little bit' due to the diminished roster. The girls then competed for third place in the tourney against the host Langham team _ and what a nailbiter it was. Trumbley says each team tied the game at a buzzer. And in double overtime, the Kodiaks hit a game-winning basket, again at the buzzer, but it was called off due to an offensive foul. Defeat Heartbreaking as it was, Trumbley agreed with the ref's call as the Kodiaks went down in defeat 82-81. On the positive side, the game saw Kodiaks point guard Krystal Kawa earn an incredible 43 points. 'You don't see that very often,' said an impressed Trumbley. That same weekend, the Kodiaks boys basketball team was at an invitational tournament in Nipawin, where they placed seventh of eight teams. Trumbley said the tourney featured schools much larger than Creighton Community School. The boys lost to Melfort and Tisdale before defeating Prince Albert Collegiate Institute in a convincing win. The Kodiaks girls are now ranked seventh in Saskatchewan in their school-size category.
