Kelly Carrington Staff Writer Flin Flonners are encouraged to bring out their golf clubs, shoes and smiles in support of a good cause. Golf Canada's Golf for the Cure will be held in Flin Flon, for the first time, this July. In support of breast cancer research, the afternoon of golf is a fun way to raise money for a great cause, said Event Coordinator Brenda Russell. After coming across an article on Golf for the Cure, Russell decided it was what Flin Flon needed. "I checked it out online and thought it was something Flin Flon would be interested in," said the former City of Flin Flon recreation director. Geared at all golf levels, the fun afternoon is open to both male and female and those 16 and older. Community support "I thought it would get lots of support from our community for a worthwhile cause," said Russell. Originally, Golf Canada set out to increase the numbers in women's golf. After running for a few years, Golf Canada decided to turn the event into a fundraiser for breast cancer. Golf for the Cure will take place July 10 at the Phantom Lake Golf Course. Friendly day Russell says she hopes to see a number of people out, as it will be a friendly day of golf. Funds will be generated from the $30 registration fee as well as donations. All the money collected will be sent to the Canadian Cancer Society office in Manitoba and then allocated back to the local committee. From there, discretion is used to either spend the money locally on breast cancer support and programing information, or to be sent out to breast cancer research across Canada. Though it's a first-time event in Flin Flon, Golf for tthe Cure has been held nationwide since 2004. Starting with only six events the first year, the numbers increased to 232 last year. The golf played in the Flin Flon event will be Texas Scramble. Along with hitting the greens, golfers will also be able to participate in a few extra events along the way. Registration forms are to be handed in ny July 7. Russell says with a cap of 90 golfers, forms should be entered quickly. Registration forms will be available at Ormiston's as well as Phantom Lake Golf Club. For more information, contact Russell at 687-2993 or chairperson Nora Fontaine at 687-6188.
