Rod Gourlay's rink of Jim Quinn, Ralph Ellingson, and Randy Beever were glad to leave the Nuntana Senior Men's Open Cash Spiel in Saskatoon $2,500 richer. "It's great," Gourlay said. "It's a long time to win one. It was very nice." To earn the cash in the tournament that took place Nov. 18-20, Gourlay's team defeated the Saskatchewan Senior champion Eugene Hritzuk, 6-5. Gourlay said the tournament was exciting and the competition was good. They played many regional and provincial champions throughout the weekend as they went 7-1 with their only loss came in the first game in the final end. "This was our team's first bonspiel as a senior rink and we found the competition tougher than expected," Gourlay said. "My team played incredible, absolutely incredible," Gourlay added. "We just had all aspects of the game going top notch." Gourlay, 50, who has been curling for 38 years said he wasn't intimidated by the competition. "We're too old to be intimidated," he said. Gourlay has curled with Ellingson, and Beever for a while, Quinn is a newcomer to the team. The owner of RJ's Motel started to play one of Canada's most popular winter sports at the age of 12. "I grew up with it," he said. "I just love it. I went out everyday and even tried playing in the dark (when they shut the lights off in the Willow Park Curling Club)."
