The Flin Flon Skating Club is gearing up for their winter session, which will begin on October 4. Registrations for the winter session will be held two weekends, for your convenience, September 11, 12, 25 and 26 in the lobby of the Whitney Forum. September 11 and 25 will be from 7-9 p.m., while September 12 and 26 will be held from 1-3:30 p.m. Pricing structures have been reworked and are more attractive than previous years, and some fundraising fees have also gone down from last year. The Flin Flon club will be holding sessions for the CanPower, CanSkate and STARSkate programs this year. Carla Wabick will be the head instructor for the CanSkate and STARSkate programs. She is a level three coach, which allows her to coach at a competitive level. Ray Donaldson will be looking after the CanPower program. He has many years of coaching experience, and is also involved with minor hockey in Flin Flon. "We're hoping that a lot of people will come out for that," said Charlene Rutley. "In the past, it has been a really great program." Last year, over 50 kids participated in the CanSkate and STARSkate portion of the program. The numbers are expected to increase, as the power skating program was not offered last year. Also this year, the CanSkate and STARSkate programs have been revamped to better accommodate the level of each skater. For example, an hour of extra instruction has been added to the STARSkate program. This is not a carnival year for the Flin Flon club. A revue will be held in the spring to showcase the skaters' talents. There will be a test day in Flin Flon on October 23. This year's Regional Competition will be held in The Pas. Other programs will be held during the year, such as an open skate-a-thon, complete with prizes for top pledges. Another event being planned for the skating community is a "Know your sport conference," which will be held on November 5-7. Skaters have been on the ice at the Whitney Forum since August for the summer session, and are currently running their fall session, which began on Tuesday. If you can't wait until October to get on the ice, late registrants are welcome for the fall session.
