The Flin Flon Skating Club, a Skate Canada sanctioned club, is gearing up for another skating season. The executive will be holding two registration weekends, September 14 and 15 and September 23. During registration the Canskaters will have a chance to meet or reacquaint themselves with the coach, Carla Wabick, and Star Skaters who act in the role of program assistants during our programs. The CanSkate and Power skating program fees are staying the same with the StarSkate fees currently being worked on with the knowledge that the Skate Canada insurance fee has increased this year to $31 per skater. However, by being a part of Skate Canada and paying insurance fees, skaters benefit and parents receive peace of mind. By regulation, this insurance charge is separately disclosed at registration. If the insurance charge is not disclosed, then the club does not carry insurance, which puts anyone on the ice at risk. Due to insurance restrictions, parents are not allowed on the ice with their skater and should let the trained individuals on the ice do their jobs. Along with insurance, every registered skater with Skate Canada is also entitled to a hotel card that will provide a reduced rate equal to the registration fee, with a two night stay. There continues to be required fundraising duties, but this requirement is decreasing. Fundraising is a part of most organizations, which helps keep the fees down. Tax receipts will be issued at registration to use for Revenue Canada's Children's Fitness Credit. Our club, being sanctioned, can deliver both CanSkate and Starskate programs. The CanSkate program involves continual testing with standardized report cards and badges as a record of the skater's progress. The Starskate program is well-developed with skaters testing in the different skills, and competing in different levels at competitions in Manitoba. Our skaters have continued success at these competitions and provincial competitions. The Flin Flon Skating Club will also be offering a Power Skating Program with the assistance of the Flin Flon Bombers. As with most organized sports associations, Skate Canada also has regulations pertaining to the professional coach employed by a club. This includes ensuring they are in good standing and have completed the necessary courses. Carla Wabick is returning to coach the CanSkate, Starskate, and Power skating programs for the 2007-2008 season. Carla brings with her a proven track record with 31 years of teaching experience and is committed to seeing the program develop through the different stages. Carla truly enjoys her job with all skaters and takes great joy in their success. The strength behind the FFSC is a group of volunteers who are dedicated to seeing skating flourish in our community. As with any volunteer executive, there is no personal gain for anyone. If a person volunteers, it is because they believe in the program and the coach. The executive is working hard to keep costs consistent and the ice times manageable. The Flin Flon Skating Club will be participating in a Skate Manitoba Day on September 23rd. The ice will be available for the skaters to try skating and have fun free of charge. More information on Skate Manitoba Day will be sent home from the schools. The Club will also be hosting a Carnival in the spring to showcase our skaters and their accomplishments. Please come out and support your local skating club.
