A number of figure skaters have represented the Flin Flon Skating Club at competitions recently. Eileen Pawliuk attended the Manitoba Open Free Skate Competition, February 13-15 in St. Adolphe, Manitoba. This competition is open to skaters from all across Canada and the United States. Eileen picked up bronze medals in the junior silver/senior silver ladies short category, and in the senior silver ladies freeskate. She was happy with her performance, as she skated a personal best and represented the club very well. Eileen then attended the Manitoba Star Skate Provincial Championships in Winnipeg, February 28 and 29 along with fellow club members Heather Bergin, Annalee Stevens and Courtney Kozak. The Star Skate Provincial Championships feature the top three skaters from each region in Manitoba. "You are skating with the best people in Manitoba, so it is more competitive," said Pawliuk. "You get a lot of good experience and practice on your programs." Eileen had three good skates, accomplishing a personal goal to better her performance with each skate. She did not place, but represented the club well. Heather had a very good skate in the senior bronze ladies category, and was a gold medalist. Her goal was to improve on her performance with each skate, and she accomplished this nicely by becoming the Manitoba Senior Bronze Ladies Provincial Champion. Annalee Stevens placed fourth in the qualifying round of the junior bronze ladies, which put her into the finals on Sunday. Her goal for the competition was to skate a better program than she had at the Norman Regional Competition, which she did. During her skate on Sunday, she had yet another good skate, improving on her last performance, but did not place in the medals. Courtney also wanted to skate a better program than she did at the Norman Competition. The performance she gave was much more polished and a far stronger program, accomplishing that goal. All of the girls have been skating for 10-12 years. "All of the girls did an excellent job at the competitions," said coach Carla Wabick. "They should all be very proud of their accomplishments, having skated much stronger and polished programs with each performance. Congratulations on a great job girls!" Next for the Flin Flon Skating Club will be their Skating Carnival. This year's theme is Kaleidoscope, and there will be two opportunities for the public to come out and watch the show. Kaleidoscope is an array of colour, light, sound and great skating ability. It will tickle the senses of anyone who enjoys skating and music. Come out and enjoy the show.
