Kelly Carrington Staff Writer Flin Flon will be bustling with activity at the end of January as the Norman Games and its athletes will be in town. With sports ranging from darts to hockey, an estimated 250 athletes will be taking part in the annual wintertime activities. Flin Flon's Whitney Forum will host a few hockey games while the Flin Flon and Creighton Ski Lodge will be the home-start for a few races. Athletes have the opportunity to participate in cross-country skiing, hockey, badminton, basketball, darts, volleyball and curling. Develop Chairperson Connie Fleuty says the Games are going to help develop those sports within in the community. More importantly than the sports themselves, Fleuty Ð who has been involved with either helping or traveling for Games over the years Ð says the real prize is the human interest stories that come out of the event. Thinking back to a trip she made to Thompson, Fleuty said a far northern community joined the games but didn't have the equipment necessary to play the sports. "Thompson gave them their equipment so they could play," she said. "The arena was packed (as spectators) cheered them on." Fleuty says that's the type of thing she is most looking forward to. "That's the kind of stuff you see. I haven't been disappointed one time," she said. Athletes are required to register for their sports by December 15. Forms can be picked up at the City of Flin Flon, the Flin Flon Recreation Office of the Flin Flon Aqua Centre. As well, the committee is always looking for more volunteers. Whether it is to help plan the Games or to help out during the Games, Fleuty says they are looking for helpers. To add your name to the volunteer list, contact Aimee Deans at 681-7542.
