Flin Flon Open championship hits the bull’s-eye

Royal Canadian Legion Branch No. 73 was a sea of flying darts last weekend as the Northern Flytes Dart Club hosted its 34th annual Flin Flon Open championship.

Royal Canadian Legion Branch No. 73 was a sea of flying darts last weekend as the Northern Flytes Dart Club hosted its 34th annual Flin Flon Open championship.

Over 60 players participated in the weekend’s six events, which included a blind draw on Friday evening in honour of Papa Krassilowsky, a former member of Flin Flon’s dart club.

Event co-organizer Brian Humphreys said many of the competitors are regular attendees who travelled from as far away as Winnipeg, Saskatoon and Hudson Bay SK for the tournament.

“We get the best of players from both sides of the border,” he said.

Rory Orvis is one of those top players, a former national darts champion from Kinosota MB.

“They are great people, and they run a terrific tournament,” said Orvis, when asked why he makes the 630-km trip each year. Orvis has been travelling to the tournament for about a decade, and brought along a family of competitors this time, including his wife, mother-in-law and 13-year-old son.

In a report after the tournament, Humphreys called the event “a tremendous success.” He said a total of $4,000 was paid out in prize money, with 26  maximum 180’s and five 177’s with the high finish of 130.

“It’s a real achievement that the tournament is still popular after 34 years,” said Humphreys, adding that the local club is hoping to create a special event to celebrate the tournament’s 35th anniversary next year.
