You can't ask for more when you've done your best. That's the feeling Heather Bergin has after competing in the national figure skating competition in Ottawa in early April. "I skated really well," Heather said, during a phone interview from Regina. "I was proud of what I did. I placed 9th in creative, 11th in interpretive and 13th in the free skate." The only area Heather expressed displeasure was with the judges. "It wasn't as fair as it should have," she said. "They used the old six-point system instead of the accumulative. Judges could favour one skater over another." Judges aside, Heather felt she did better than last year and was pleased with where she ended up. Another area she was happy with was the overall experience. "It was really awesome," she said. "It was great to be in a new area and the facility was really nice. I really enjoyed myself and it was better than what I thought it would be." During her competition, she said she felt no pressure. "It was about enjoying myself and enjoying my skate," she explained. What she took from the experience that will push her to get better is knowing that there are better skaters than her. "I'm going to work harder than in the past and try harder," Heather explained, as she believes she's capable of pushing herself harder. Now she will focus on improving her jumps, which need consistency and speed. Next year as she strives to get better, she will do it again representing Manitoba.
