Flin Flon will be athlete central from Feb. 25-27 as the city hosts the 2007 Nor-Man Winter Games. With badminton, hockey, basketball, curling, volleyball, and darts scheduled, there won't be a shortage of events for people to watch. "We're always excited and enthusiastic to host the Nor-Man Games whether it's winter or summer," said Flin Flon recreation director, Brenda Russell. "It's a great community event and it gives local athletes a chance to participate at home." The focus of the games, Russell said, is to set up a grassroots level to encourage participation in sport development and fair play. The winter games are for athletes aged 10 and up. To make sure everything runs smoothly, money and volunteers will be crucial. Russell said that financial support comes from a base grant provided by Sport Manitoba, which is $7,500, and fundraising efforts. Presently, it's unknown how much money will be needed until it's known how many athletes will participate. "It's not about making money, but good visibility for the community," she said. "Volunteers are a huge part of making this a success. People can contact myself or Aimee (Deans) to get involved." While preparations get underway, Russell said she is still waiting to find out if girls hockey and figure skating will be included. It also appears that Special Olympics may be left out in the cold since the bowling alley is now closed. She's unsure if another sport is available.
