On Sunday, May 28 the Flin Flon Fury U18 girl's soccer team played the Thompson Flames in the first of two inaugural Northern Soccer League games. The games were held in Snow Lake. As the first game got underway both teams obviously wanted to score first. But it was the Fury who hit the score sheet with a hard, well timed shot by Nicole Pawliuk low and to the left of the Flames goalkeeper. The Flames, lacking movement off the ball, found it hard to compete with the mobile Fury, whose command of midfield controlled the flow of the game. The Fury went into half leading 1-0, but aware that any slip in concentration would result in the Flames getting back into the game. That is exactly what happened as the Flames pushed forward and with a vicious shot to the left of Fury goalkeeper Jacquelyn Spence. The Fury came right back, and within minutes had hit the Flames crossbar. Minutes later Fury forward Kirsten Clark hit the back of the net with her first goal of the day, a left footed shot that gave the goalie no chance. Teslyn Anderson's goal sealed the win for a delighted Fury team. The game was marred by an injury to Fury forward Amanda Hill, who sustained a neck injury battling for the ball. Hill, who was unable to continue and received medical treatment, will hopefully able to compete in the next game on June 11. With the first game over, and a well deserved 3-1 victory, both teams took a break. The second game was the highlight of the day, 90-minutes of superb soccer by a team of tired athletes. Even though most of the Fury players had competed in the varsity zone athletic meet in The Pas the day earlier, the desire to win overcame their tired legs. Goals in each half by Lynsie-Leigh Swain and Clark sealed the win for Flin Flon. The Flames coach switched goalkeepers in an attempt to stay in the game, but the movement of the Fury defense, always pushing the Flames forwards off the ball and out of danger, together with the midfield play of Anderson, Krassilowsly and Swain was the deciding factor in this contest. The next game between these teams is again being held in Snow Lake on June 11. The Flin Flon Fury team is made up of, Jacquelyn Spence, Zoe Pittet, Morgan Pittet, Casandra Barron, Kyrra Kosar, Teslyn Anderson, Lynsie-Leigh Swain, Amanda Hill, Analee Stevens, Sarah Stevens, Kirsten Clark, Ashley Krassilowsky, and Nicole Pawliuk.
