The Flin Flon Curling Club is gearing up for another great year of curling. With a new executive comes some exciting new ideas for the upcoming season. First of all, in an attempt to increase our membership, we are asking some of the current teams to reorganize and get some new curlers into curling. The goal is to make Tuesday night a more competitive night and Thursday to be more of a social night. Curl with your regular team on Tuesday, but split up on Thursday and get some new curlers out and perhaps fill two draws. The leagues will have a point system and playoffs for Club Champion and a ÒYZÓ champion as well. This is also an invitation to all the rec clubs or businesses out there to create your own team with your employees or members. The organization pays the membership fees and then makes sure four different people show up every week. There could be a team from the Zinc Plant, the Norman Region Health Region, School divisions, RCMP or Pharmasave etc. Looking to do something special for your staff, what better way than a healthy activity in a social setting? For all the people working shift work, this could give you the chance to maybe curl once or twice a year or more and you may even have some fun doing it. Last year, at the general meeting it was passed that anyone under the age of 19 could curl in a league for free in the MenÕs and Ladies leagues. The idea was for sons and daughters to curl with their parents and learn the game. How many things can our children do for free? The club just asks that you make a commitment for the full season and who knows you might become a member for life. Junior Curling will be offered again this year. We are leaning towards Sundays for this program. It would start late October and run until early March. For more information please contact Debbie McNeill at 687-4241. For the many of you that do not curl but would like to try we are creating a drop in league that would be played after the early draw. Pay $5 and play scrub curling. This would be open to anyone of any level, come on down, make up teams and have some fun. What the club is asking for is donations of brooms and sliders for this to work. As part of your membership package this year to create some excitement we are offering a free bonspiel to kick off the year and perhaps a free one to kick off the new year as well. A ladies and menÕs bonspiel will occur at the same time and people will enter as individuals and not as a team at the time of sign up. We will then put everyone into a hat as per their normal position and draw up teams for the bonspiel. It is meant as a fun event to kick off the season and if you are unable to curl in it this year maybe you will next year. There will be a benefit social on Saturday September 13/08 for Russ Reeves to be held at the uptown rink. Tickets are available at Flin Flon Insurance, Gas Bar, Gateway and DiÕs Confectionary. Russ is a long time curler who has volunteered countless hours over the years at different clubs. Russ shattered both his ankles while doing volunteer work at the rink last spring. This is a great opportunity to gather with friends and show our great Flin Flon support. The current executive for the upcoming season is Scott Gourlay, Darren Ward, Gord Rowe, Brad Hyrich, Noel Fernandes, Andy Burbidge, Tony Flynn and Russ Reeves (past president). We are still looking for representation for the ladies leagues on the executive. Anyone that is interested in signing up as an individual or a full team can e-mail Ryan Watt at 4wattsasktel.net or phone 688-4412 and he will get you on a team and curling. Get involved, have fun and ÒRock the HouseÓ this winter. The above is a paid advertisement.
