Recently things have been pretty quiet on the female hockey front in Flon Flon, until last Saturday's Esso Fun Day. Girls sometimes seem to think that hockey is only for the "guys" to get together, have fun and compete, but last Saturday Flin Flon's chicks with sticks from the ages of four to 40-something got on the ice to skate, fall down and laugh with each other. Jamie Leary, a female hockey coach from out of town, led the girls through the basics of skating, stick handling, equipment selection, team building and the benefits of hockey for the physical and mental well-being of women and girls. Hopefully this is just the start of the road to developing a thriving female hockey program in our area so that girls can also participate in Canada's greatest game for fun, fitness and friends.
