Successfully filling in as starter has earned Flin Flon Bombers netminder Brenden Newton the SaskTel SJHL Goaltender of the Week award for the week ended Sunday, Jan. 17.
Newton, 18, made two starts last week, both against La Ronge, and stopped 60 of 61 shots to record a pair of victories, the second of which was a shutout.
Heading into Tuesday’s action, the rookie puckstopper from Medicine Hat, Alberta, had a record of 8-4-0-0-1 with a 2.59 GAA and a .923 SP.
Meanwhile, former Bomber Austin Calladine was name the Canalta Hotels SJHL Player of the Week.
Calladine, who is now with the Kindersley Klippers, had three goals and four assists in four games.
This has been a breakout season offensively for Calladine, 20, as he has 19 goals and 40 assists for 59 points in 41 games.
Branden Scheidl of Kindersley was named IBAS SJHL Defenceman of the Week. The SJHL Rookie of the Week was Coby Downs of Battlefords.
