The holidays are here, and you may be traveling to spend the time with family and loved ones. But, what will this do to your exercise routine? Whether you're an exercise buff or not - it can be tough to keep a steady exercise routine when you're on the road. Just the thought of finding a gym, or of getting lost on a walk or run in a new place ? is enough to tire you out. So, we asked certified fitness pro Larry Track for some tips on how to stay fit while traveling. Step 1: Water Dehydration is a common problem during travel due to climate changes, high altitudes and accessibility. Think like a camel and buy a super size bottle before you depart to keep on hand. Water will keep you energized and prevent cramping whether you're stuck in an airplane, train, or a car seat. Step 2: Cardio Jumping Jacks: This childhood favourite is a great way to get your blood flowing and your energy levels up for the day. One set of 25-50 jumping jacks will get your day started faster than any cup of coffee, and will also tone your shoulders and deltoid muscles. Jump Rope: Grab one of these and throw it in your bag ? you'll be whisked back to your childhood. Jumping rope for five minutes will get your heart rate up and your body ready for any activity. Jogging: Plan a tour of the new city you're visiting with a short jog (10-20 minutes) around the block once you arrive. Extend your Jog into a long run, if time and weather permit. Walk the terminals: Stuck at an airport delay? Waiting for your train or bus to leave? Don't just sit and read a magazine, get up and walk around. No need to run around the terminal, just get up, walk and explore, and keep yourself moving. Rentals: Rent a bike or pair of rollerblades and go sightseeing. If you have a partner, rent a double-bike and peddle away ? it'll make your trip that much more fun. Stair Climbing: This is the easiest way to get in some activity. Plan a 10-20 minute workout climbing the stairs. Don't feel embarrassed ? most people will admire your efforts. Go dancing: If time and energy permit, find the local hot spot where you are and show 'em your stuff. Dance the night away! Step 3: Strength Training Push-ups: Get down and do some push-ups wherever you are! Plan to do them every morning before you leave your room ? your upper body will thank you! Unless you're in water, there's no excuse for skipping your push-ups ? and even then ? you can swim laps to get your upper body workout. Crunches: No reason to let your stomach muscles go soft ? grab a couple of towels, place them under your head, and start crunching. This way ? you're sure to keep your tummy tight. Squats: This is a great way to tone your butt and keep your legs strong. Place a chair behind you and pretend to sit. Just before your butt hits the chair, stand up and breathe out. Repeat this exercise until you've tired yourself out. Resistance Bands: They fit easily into your luggage, and you can use them in a variety of ways right in the comfort of your own room ? and get a full body workout! The different types of resistance bands can be used to tone your lower body, strengthen your upper body, and for core conditioning (abdominals). Step 4: Snacks Plan ahead ? it's just as important to carry healthy snacks. Try energy bars, or Weight Watchers Just 2-POINTS! Bars. This way you'll be better prepared to resist the temptation of other snacks, and you'll be energized for your workout. Step 5: Inspiration Print out some Success Stories and bring them on the road with you to keep you motivated. This way, whenever you feel your motivation waning, just open your bag, take out a Success Story, and remind yourself why you're doing this. Step 6: Stay on track Don't forget to keep track of everything you eat and all your activities. If there's no computer at your destination, make sure to print out copies of your online POINTS Tracker to take with you on the road so you can stay on top of your game. This will help you to stay focused while out of your routine.7/14/2004
