The Flin Flon Bombers picked up their first victory away from the Whitney Forum in the unlikeliest of places, winning 5-4 over the Notre Dame Hounds on Wednesday. Usually the oversized ice surface that the Hounds call home is a disadvantage to visiting teams, but the Bombers were able to overcome, getting two goals from Carter Chomyn including the winner with less than two minutes to play. The Bombers were badly out shot, this time 48-26, including 25-6 in the second period. Flin Flon jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the first period. Ronald Marcoux scored a power-play goal at 4:44 from Clayton Geiger and Tyler Beachell. David Holinaty made it 2-0 at 8:53, with Beachell assisting. Beachell picked up his third assist of the night on a Dalton Pajak goal at 11:42. Holinaty picked up the other assist. Chad Anderson scored on a Notre Dame power play at 14:40 to get the Hounds back in the game. Shots after the first period were 11-10 in favour of the Bombers. They fell asleep in the second period and gave Notre Dame a chance to get back in the game. Devin Moore scored at 5:50 to make it a 3-2 game. Carter Chomyn restored Flin Flon's two goal lead at 6:06 with an unassisted goal, but Devin Moore replied with a goal at 8:49 to make it 4-3 after two periods of play. Andrew Owsiak scored his first goal of the season at 2:25 of the third period to tie the game. Chomyn's goal at 18:16 to give Flin Flon the win was his second of the game and third on the season, and was assisted by Andrew Leslie and Blake McCullough. Francois Laverdiere relieved Dale Pettit at the 8:50 mark of the second period and allowed one goal on 26 shots. Pettit made 19 saves on 22 shots in the first 28:50. At the other end of the ice, Marc Cheverie allowed three goals on nine shots before being replaced by Chance Gieni, who allowed two goals on 17 shots. Flin Flon scored one goal on two power plays, while Notre Dame scored once on four chances. With the win, the Bombers improved to 8-28-6-2, and are now 10 points behind the Melfort Mustangs with 11 games left on the schedule. If Melfort loses their remaining ten games, the Bombers would need five wins to tie them, including three games in Melfort. The Mustangs are on a seven game losing streak. The Bombers had last night off, and will be in Weyburn tonight to take on the Red Wings. Last time these two teams met was on November 26, when the Bombers beat the Red Wings 5-3. Flin Flon will finish the road trip tomorrow with a game in Estevan.
