The months of training paid off for the two Flin Flon Firefighters who competed in this yearÕs Fire Fit Combat Challenge in Prince Albert over the weekend. Rob Trubiak and Darren Romo had been training in the fire hall as best they could. But the two took the opportunity to go to the challenge a day early and get some experience on the actual course. Between their training and chance to run the course, Romo crossed the finish line at 2:04 and Trubiak followed at 2:18. ÒWe did way better than anticipated,Ó said Trubiak. ÒFor a first time competitor a good time would be between 2:30 and three minutes, so we did really good.Ó Because the fire hall isnÕt equipped with a full course, the firefighters did their best to simulate what they would be up against. ÒI think we simulated it really well,Ó says Trubiak. ÒA difference would be simulating the tower that is six storeys.Ó As the competitors took in the extra day of training at the course in Prince Albert, they had some extra help. Trubiak and Romo took advantage of a few of the experienced firefighters and had them help them along. Even with the training and the help, Romo says the competition was an Òeye opener.Ó ÒWeÕve never been on the course before, but weÕve got some modifications for next year (for the training). So I would say we would improve our times quite a bit next year,Ó he says. Though they were the only two firefighters from Flin Flon who entered the challenge, they did bring along a cheering section. And they say next year they hope to have them out on the course with them. ÒDarren and I were the only ones from Flon Flin this year, but weÕre looking to put together a relay team with three more,Ó says Trubiak. ÒAnd those who came for moral support are thinking about competing now.Ó Along side of the cheering section was Fire Chief Jim Petrie. ÒThe Fire Chief and the department are extremely proud of the two individuals who attended and we hope to continue to showcase the talent of the fire department.Ó Darren Romo and Rob Trubiak would like to thank the following individuals and sponsors Flin Flon Fire Fighters Association, Fire Chief Jim Petrie, ABC Fire, Innotex, Acklands-Granger, Ryan Chigol of the P.A.F.D for all their support at the Scott Fire Fit Championships.
