Kelly Carrington Staff Writer A design meeting for the Flin Flon Skate Park had input from seven residents last week. The Flin Flon Skate Park Committee held an open meeting at the City Hall on December 22 to get the input of those who will be using the park. With community interest stated, it is hoped that the park will be put to use more often. Three adults and four youth attended the meeting, along with the committee, as they gave their thoughts on what they would like to see at the park. Alex McGilvrey, the committee's chair person, said it was a very successful meeting. "We looked at the design and made some good suggestions around the features," he said. Looking at the design, which was made as a tentative template by the Canadian Ramp Company, those at the meeting said it needed more rails and more places to grind. The skate park will be designed for things like skate boards, roller blades and scooters. McGilvrey said one spot on the design was mentioned and noted that the residents would like to see an enhancement on the steps with an extended rail. This would "make it more advanced," he said. Although there were advanced options brought up, McGilvrey says the park will still offer something for those at all skill levels. One of the suggestions was to redo the middle piece and make it more of a "fun box" Ð a piece that will have more ramps and rails. "They were drawing and talking and getting animated about the whole thing," McGilvrey said about those who attended the meeting. Templates of the current design were dropped off to local schools to both inform the students of the meeting as well as give them a chance to think about their ideas. With seven new minds thinking about the design, McGilvrey said it was a productive night. "I think it was successful. I would have liked to see more older people," he said. The youth who made it to the meeting were at the middle school level. Still impressed with the turnout, McGilvrey said it would have been nice to see a few high school students. The meeting, none the less, was helpful for the committee. "It gave us what we needed to do," he said. From there, the committee will take the designs into consideration and host a final decision meeting Ð amongst themselves. "We (hope) that we'll be able to have a final design in early January and get the fundraising moving," said McGilvrey. Looking over the ideas that came up throughout the meeting, he says there were a number of good suggestions. "We got some good input on some possible changes," the chair person said. The Flin Flon Skate Park Committee will then send the feedback to the Canadian Ramp Company to make sure the ideas will work and fit into place.
