The Flin Flon rose above the Flin Flon Fireman 4-1 to win the 6th Annual Mel Pearson Memorial Tournament, which was in honour of Shayne Pearson. Canadians player Adam Hilts thought the game was good. "The game was tough and we played good," Hilts said. "I had fun during the tournament." There was a good crowd on hand that began cheering for the Fireman squad, who seemed out matched at times, but gave the Canadians respectable competition. After starting slow offensively, the game opened up after Canadians player Taylor Cassidy scored his first of two goals before the first period ended. The lone goal for the Fireman came from Nathan Schiltroth, who was one of his team's main offensive threats. He carried the puck with speed and avoided checks well at times. Schiltroth had help as his teammates created scoring chances, but simply couldn't beat goalie Zachary Crisp. "I'm proud of them," said Canadians coach Sean Black, "and the Fireman played good too, they played a great game, it's been excellent." Cassidy was joined by teammate Isaac Jackson, who also had two goals. The performance of the Canadians left Black with a smile on his face. "Pretty exciting," he said of winning the tournament. "I don't think I've ever won anything like this before. It's great for the kids, they're the ones that won it. "I didn't do anything, I was just behind the bench opening the gates." Fireman coach Tyler Kittle also liked what he saw despite being on the wrong end of the result. "I thought it was a really good game," Kittle said. "Two deserving teams made it to the A side final, played awesome all game. They (his team) actually played really good all weekend, I'm really proud of them." Firemen player Riley Nowlin said it was a good game. His tournament ended by earning the Mr. Hustle award. "Not bad," Nowlin said of the achievement. He liked the way he played, but felt he got checked a lot. "It was still really really really fun." McKeen's Trucking won 7-1 against The Pas Canadians to win the B side, Jack Turner event, while Swan River defeated The Pas Redwings 5-4 to earn the C side, Scott Davidson event. Winning the D side, Paddy Ginnell event, was The Pas White Knights 11-4 over the Gillam Chargers.
