The Flon Flon Female Bombers attended the female Midget 'A' Provincials in Pinawa, Manitoba, on the weekend of March 6 and 7 to try to bring home the provincial championship banner and the gold medal. In a hard fought game against MacGregor it all came down to a lucky bounce in the first minute then it was 49 minutes of scoreless end to end hockey. Our first game was against Brandon with Flin Flon winning 8-1. Goal scorers were Colleen Cairns with two, and singles going to Laronda Constant, Natasha Flett, Kaytlin Drews, April Chornoby, Shannon Weber, and Anne Marie Mathews. Assists went to Raelyn LaRocque with three, Drews with two, Chornoby, Sarah Stevens, Constant, Tara Abbott, Flett, Mathews, and Amber McKenzie all with one. We controlled the play throughout the game as the score indicates, but if it wasn't for Brandon's goaltender it could have been worse because the shots must have been in the 40s. Game two put us against a team from Fisher River. It was a very spirited game to say the least. We ended up on top with a score of 9-1. Goal scorers were LaRocque, Cairns, and Abbott with two, and McKenzie, Weber, and Constant adding singles. Assists went to Abbott, Drews, and Mathews who had two helpers, and Flett, Chornoby, Weber, and Danielle Murphy with one apiece. After the round robin teams were ranked 1 - 6 with us in first, MacGregor in second, Pinawa third, and Fisher River in fourth. Birtle and Brandon played off for the consolation final. The first semifinal was us against the team from Fisher River and the second semifinal saw the host team Whiteshell against MacGregor. In our semifinal we beat the team from Fisher River 10-3. Goal scorers were Cairns, Constant, and Larocque all with two, Chornoby, Flett, Stevens, and Weber adding singles. Assists went to Cairns and Gail Neufeld with two, Chornoby, Constant, Flett, LaRocque, and Mathews chipping in with one. This moved us in to the gold medal game against the winner of the second semifinal game, MacGregor. As stated earlier it was a very exciting and hard fought game with the outcome favouring the other team 1-0. The girls did everything we could have asked of them, giving it their all and never giving up. Every player was involved in the scoring one way or another, showing the great depth of this team, and with only two graduating players it looks pretty good for the future. Since I've become involved with girls hockey, this is the best finish we have ever had, so great job girls and congratulations. This year's team that attended Provincials were Amber Kowal and Amber McKenzie from Flin Flon, Raelyn LaRocque and Anne Marie Mathews from The Pas, Natasha Flett and April Chornoby from Split Lake, Laronda Constant from OCN, and Shannon Weber from Thompson. Plus a big thank you to our affiliate players. If you weren't there then we wouldn't have been able to go. They were Tara Abbott and Gail Neufeld from Flin Flon, Sarah Stevens from Creighton, Colleen Cairns and Kaytlin Drews from Snow Lake, and Danielle Murphy from The Pas. Coaches were Ron LaRocque, Len McKenzie, and safety Connie McKenzie. Thanks for the great year.
