Jonathon Naylor Editor The Patty Evans rink successfully defended its championship title over the weekend at the 80th Annual Flin Flon Ladies' Bonspiel. The Evans rink downed the Sue Chrisp rink 10-3 to take the bonspiel's main event for the second consecutive year. 'It's just the way the game went,' said Evans, adding that Chrisp and her teammates are 'never out of a game.' Held Friday, Saturday and Sunday at the Uptown Curling Club, the bonspiel brought together the Flin Flon area's best female curlers. Twenty-six rinks competed in four hard-fought events. Most teams were from the Flin Flon area, but two came from Cranberry Portage and one from Swan River. Also taking part were two curlers from Snow Lake and another two from Winnipeg. In Sunday's final, Evans and her team of third Barb Groff, second Cindy Rainville and lead Laura Clark-Watt captured the Flin Flon Insurance Main Event. Winning the second event, the Pharmasave Event, was the Robbie Limoges rink of third Teresa Grindle, second Denise Davis and lead Tiffany Anderson. They downed the Wanda Rogers rink 7-6. On top in the third event, the North of 53 Consumers Co-op Event, was the Stacy Blackmon rink of second Debbie Sinclair, third Kim Johnson and lead Carrie Pockett. They doubled up on the Terri Kennedy rink 10-5. Victorious in the fourth event, the Hudbay Event, was the Geri Kostuchuk rink of third Darlene Myden, second Evelyn Meyers and lead Irene Kozar. They beat the Sheila Leclerc rink 9-4. Each of the winners will have their names engraved on a trophy that remains at the club. They also had first dibs at a variety of donated prizes. Evans thought the level of competition throughout the weekend was 'excellent.' 'We've always had really good teams and it was just nice to see so many familiar faces back out again,' she said. Evans and two of her teammates have been curling together for more than 15 years. The skip herself has been at the sport since her early teens, inspired by watching her dad, Morley Pedwell, curl. In addition to their trophy, the Evans rink members have the option of taking a scenic 30-minute plane ride or a 15-minute helicopter ride over the Flin Flon area. In honour of this being the 80th year for the bonspiel, a small historical display was set up in the club lounge. It featured vintage black and white photos, weathered programs and even an old-style curling broom.
