A Flin Flon resident and two former residents recently competed in the Fort Whyte Centre's EcoAdventure in Winnipeg on April 25. Flin Flon's Larry Linnick was on a relay team with John Kenny and Tara Founk, who spent three years in Flin Flon, and John's good friend Alain Foidart. The team placed a respectable 10th out of 22 teams in the relay "It was a great expereince," said Linnick, who found out about the event through an email from friends in Winnipeg. "There was a lot of energy around the event, and I hope to do it again next year." This was the fifth annual EcoAdventure, and nearly 300 athletes took part. The Fort Whyte Centre's EcoAdventure is a 44 km race through the City of Winnipeg, including canoeing, running, rollerblading and cycling. The event is a fundraiser for the Centre, and also promotes the use of non-polluting transportation methods through the challenging and fun urban adventure race. The race started off with a 2 km canoe/kayak through the lakes at the Fort Whyte Centre, with portages where necessary. That was followed by 6.5 km run through Fort Whyte's Inland Millennium Forest and north through the Assiniboine Forest. Next was a 7 km rollerblade along Grant through the Assiniboine Forest and Park, followed by another 6.5 km run from Assiniboine Park to Downtown Winnipeg. The bike portion of the race finished off the course from Downtown Winnipeg back to the Fort Whyte Centre and the finish line. John and Allen did the canoe portion of the race, and John also ran the first leg of the run, which was straight through the forest with no marked path. Allen did rollerblading, and tagged Larry to do the second run through the city. Larry tagged Tara to do the bike to the finish line. On a side note, a team from The Pas called "Not from Flin Flon" was entered in the race. Their name was inspired by a long-time rivalry with Flin Flon, and they finished 12th out of 30 teams. "I would like to encourage someone to see if we can organize a similar race here," said Linnick. "We have all of the facilities. It would be great to get something going for next year."
