Kelly Carrington Staff Writer A minor accident sent one mom into action as she set out to create a safe and fun place for children to play. Two years ago, Annette Last's daughter, Taylor Dundas, tripped over a piece of playground equipment at the Flin Flon Trailer Court playground. The mother of two contacted the City of Flin Flon to report the incident and see what steps could be taken. Due to the age of the structure, the city removed the old swing set. Last connected with then-recreation director Brenda Russell to help her build a new park. After pricing out playground equipment for the proposed refurbished park, Last took a petition to the residents of the Trailer Court for permission to rebuild. Grants came in and Last was soon on her way. The HudBay Minerals 80th Anniversary Fund gave Last $16,000. Another $5,000 came from the Neighbourhood Revitalization Corporation and $4,000 from the City of Flin Flon. With a total bill of $25,000, the Flin Flon Trailer Court was rebuilt with a new swing set and a fun set of monkey bars. Keeping the slide and rocking horse from before, the park is constantly busy. "It wasn't a lot of work," said Last, "it was just a lot of waiting." The physical work was done by a local company and Last says she hopes the success of the project encourages others to want to do the same. 'Four leters' "I wrote four letters, walked around with a petition and hired a contractor," said the determined mom. The improved playground was finished recently and has since had children from the area on the structures every day. "The kids are here every night and when I drive by, it makes me smile," said a proud Last. Currently grass seed has been laid and Last hopes to see picnic tables and a basketball net in the future. A sign will soon be hoisted to announce the improved Flin Flon Trailer Court Playground.9/19/2011
