In September, 2003, Master Nyall Oberg, 3rd Dan Black Belt member of Kang's Taekwondo Academy, started a branch club in Denare Beach. He expected there would be enough interest locally for a relatively small club. However, the idea was enthusiastically received, and over 30 members signed up. Most members had never participated in Taekwondo before. Since then, there have been promotion tests held at the Flin Flon Taekwondo Club, under the test committee of Master Andy Jedele. Many of the members were successfully promoted to the yellow stripe, yellow belt, and green stripe belt levels. The two senior members, Keenan Oberg and James Vleugels participated in the Black Belt test at the Kang's headquarters in Winnipeg in February. James was successfully promoted to Black Belt, 1st dan, and Keenan was promoted to 2nd poom belt level (2nd degree junior black belt). In the August Black Belt test, Master Oberg was promoted to the level of Master, 4th Dan. Assistant instructor, Lois Cantin, was promoted to 2nd Dan. Classes are held Monday and Thursday at the Denareplex. The classes are divided into adult and junior classes, with the junior class at 7 p.m. and the adult class at 8 p.m. Master Oberg extends an invitation to anyone of any age over 6-years-old who is interested in fitness, fun, and self-defense to come out and see what it's like. New members are welcome at any time. It is an excellent activity for a family to do together. There is no upper age limit to start, and no limit to the satisfaction and benefits of participating in Taekwondo. For anyone that would like to participate but feels that registration costs are a barrier, Kidsport application forms are available from Master Oberg.
