The Pineroot Raceway will be torn up once again at the Demolition Derby. The event is being held on Sunday, August 12. Coordinator Steve Spring says people come to watch the derby for the "excitement of the smash." On average between 15 and 20 cars sign up and Spring hopes for the same this year. "I would love to see 20 cars out there," he says, adding that "just from looking around, I'd say we've got about 15 already this year." Cars won't be able to register for the derby until the morning of the event, but Spring says "you see cars around town and there are some in Denare Beach, just ready to go." Anyone who is interested in driving in the event is able to come down. "They can be from Flin Flon or Creighton or The Pas or Thompson," he says, noting that "there is no limit." Spring himself will be entering three cars for this year's derby. "I'm going to be driving one and I've got my two daughters coming down to drive," says Spring. With smashing cars together comes danger, but Spring says there precautions are taken. "You can't hit the driver's door or you are black flagged," he says. And he adds, "gas tanks and batteries are carried inside the car, for safety reasons as well." Drivers are also required to wear seat belts and helmets. But he reassures "there haven't been any serious injuries in the past." All demo car drivers and children 12 years old and younger may watch the derby for free. For non-drivers 13 and up, there will be a charge at the gate. The money raised will go to the Flin Flon Dirt Track Racing Association for maintenance.
