Twenty-six cars, flying dirt and plenty of smash-ups made for a fun time at this yearÕs Demolition Derby. As about 1,000 people surrounded the Pine Root Raceway last Sunday, as drivers gave it their best to ruin and sabotage the other cars. With four heats and two consolation rounds, the main event was made up. With merely a frame attached to a seat, the drivers drove what was left of their cars into the ring to battle it out for first place. Fans watched and yelled in the hot sun as doors were smashed and bumpers were torn off. Organizer Steve Spring, who has been involved with the derby for many years, says with 26 cars in the ring, it was a pretty good year. ÒThatÕs better than average,Ó said Spring, noting that the most cars that have come out at once was 30. ÒIt was fantastic.Ó Spring, along with all who where involved with the event, was also pleased with the size of the crowd. ÒWe had 585 paid and with kids, IÕd say there were about 1,000.Ó Joining the cars this year were a few out of towners as a car from The Pas and one from Tisdale were included. ÒI hope they enjoyed themselves,Ó he said. Not new to the game, but certainly a fan favourite, was the Powder Puff, which had two heats this year. ÒBefore the women got involved with driving with the men, it (the Powder Puff) was set up for the ladies to drive themselves,Ó said Spring. ÒNow that the ladies drive with the men, which I think is great. I think that if the men want to drive in the Powder Puff, go for it.Ó But Spring did add that the event was Òdesigned for the ladies.Ó And following the Powder Puff, cars are given one last chance to perform. The mechanics, who think the cars have a fighting chance, take their works of art out to the ring and give it a try. This years Demo Derby was moved to coincide with the Homecoming and the 75th Birthday Bash, but Spring says it will be back to normal next year. ÒItÕs normally the second week in August, and...I think itÕs a good chance it will be there next year.Ó Results for the 2008 Demo Derby are as follows: Heat one First Stop Computer Service trophy - Dustin Law Heat two Kinecor trophy - Kristen Nowlin Heat three Twin Motors trophy - Kevin Niedermaier Heat four A&A Auto trophy - Kerry Christianson First Consolation Northland Ford - James Brown Second Consolation McKeenÕs Trucking trophy - Jason Tardiff Main Event Scorpio Bearing, IAM local 1848, Flin Flon Track trophy - Kristen Nowlin True North Hauling Powder Puff trophy - Tasha Brough Flin Flon Dirt Track Powder Puff trophy - Crystal Christanson Mechanics Anderson Decorating and Painting trophy - Malcalm Kennedy Best Dressed Gateway Drive In trophy - Chris Danis Sportsmanship Chicken Chef trophy - Chelsi Ikert Hard Luck Treeline trophy - Gordon Kelly
