CBC has fired popular sports announcer Chris Cuthbert, whose enthusiastic descriptions of hockey and football match-ups have been a fixture on Canadian television for more than a dozen years. Nancy Lee, CBC's head of sports, said Tuesday's decision was motivated by revenue losses at the network stemming from the cancelation of the NHL season. "I really can't say anything right now, because there will be some issues about settlement and everything else," Cuthbert told The Globe and Mail. Cuthbert had worked for The People's Network since 1984, joining the sports staff in 1991. He was the network's lead announcer for the CFL and second-in-command, behind Bob Cole, on Hockey Night in Canada.
