The Flin Flon Curling Club recently participated in the Registration Under One Roof earlier this month. Final registration for the 2013-14 season will be held at the Curling Club on Wednesday, October 2 from 6:30 to 7:30 p.m. with the Fall meeting to follow. Like most other organizations, the Curling Club is looking for more members to take on Executive positions. We are in need of a President and Vice President for the upcoming season. Anyone who is unable to attend the registration or meeting can pick up a registration form and information at Flin Flon Insurance on Main Street. Registration fees for the new season remain the same, or very similar, as last year for most leagues. The Club does fundraise in order to keep the registration fees affordable. Fundraising will also help us to undertake some additional renovations to the club to update the facility with new flooring in the club room, siding the main entrance, and updating the washrooms. Men's evening leagues run on Tuesdays and Thursdays while the ladies' evening leagues run on Mondays and Wednesdays. The Hot Stove league curls on Monday and Wednesday afternoons. The ladies have an afternoon league on Tuesdays and Thursdays. Once again, the club will fully subsidize high school students who wish to curl in the evening leagues. Registration is still required, however no fees are charged. The students are expected to participate in the club's fundraising efforts. Mixed curling is held most Friday nights. The mixed league leans more to a social night out rather than being extremely competitive. The registration fees are minimal and substitution rules are very lenient. Having only one curling club in the Flin Flon, Creighton, and Denare Beach area means that the members of the mixed league are pre-empted on occasion for some bonspiels that are booked at the club. The mixed season wraps up in the Spring with a poker derby-type of bonspiel. Last year, the club ran a Grey Cup bonspiel with teams entering into either a competitive or noncompetitive pool. Teams were any combination of men, ladies, or a mixture with a modified skins format played. A banquet was held and door prizes were available for everyone who donned some CFL attire. We will be running a similar bonspiel this year and sign-up sheets will be available at the rink. The club room is available for rent for Christmas parties, anniversaries, etc., and the curling ice is also available for rent to local groups for bonspiels.
