After some confusion and contradictions, both Uptown and Willowpark curling clubs are functioning as efficiently as ever. Uptown does have more teams than usual with Willowpark having less, however the curling spirit is alive and well. Uptown is anticipating the arrival of 'curler extraordinare' Guy Hemmings. Guy will be arriving in Flin Flon on Friday, October 29. There will be a fun spiel held at the Uptown Club on Friday night with all entrants' names thrown into a hat. Three lucky people will actually be on Guy's team. There is a limit of 23 curlers, so register Uptown soon as there are only about 12 spots still open! On Saturday morning, Guy will hold a curling clinic for the school kids of Flin Flon and Creighton starting with grades 1-4 for the first hour, grades 5-8 the second hour and grades 9 and up during the third hour. This is free of charge and all kids are welcome. Spectators are encouraged to attend as well! In the afternoon, Guy will be touring around Flin Flon and Creighton going to the PCH, Legion Housing, Heritage Manor, etc. visiting the seniors of our area. Saturday night there will be a banquet held at the Flin Flon Community Hall with Guy as guest speaker. Tickets are available till October 21 so don't wait till the last minute! In other curling news, on Monday, November 1 at the Uptown Curling Rink from 4:30 to 5:30 p.m. the Junior Curling begins and all interested kids are invited to attend. Uptown will also be hosting the Scott Tournament of Hearts Zone Playdowns on December 10, 11 and 12. The Willowpark Curling Club will be having a tea on Saturday, November 6 from 2 to 4 p.m. to honour Doug Gourlay who was recently inducted into the Manitoba Curling Hall of Fame. Everyone is welcome to come and join in the celebration. Willowpark will be hosting the Men's Grey Cup Bonspiel on November 19, 20 and 21. Get you name up on the poster as soon as possible. Willowpark will also be hosting the Business People's Bonspiel in January, 2005. Plans are still in the works. I will be writing a monthly curling news article on both clubs throughout the curling season, as well as covering special events if notified of same! Events can't be covered unless they are made evident 'before' the fact rather than 'after', so call The Reminder and let me know at least one week in advance and I'll be there! In the meantime? good curling and good sportsmanship!10/20/2004
