Provincials was a running success for Hapnot Collegiate's cross-country team on Oct. 13. The team competed at the Birch Ski Area for the MHSAA provincial cross-country championship and the junior boys team finished seventh while Lyle LeClair and Michelle Tremblay-Boulianne had good results. "I would say I was pleased with the performance everyone had," says coach Steve Lytwyn. "We managed to beat a couple Winnipeg schools and that's always a plus." Lytwyn stated the main thing is that the course was hard, but preparation helped. "We do lots of intervals at the track," he says. "We do 260 metre, 500 metre and 1000 metre, time them. It's important if they can run at what we need at the track." The reason for this is because it helps to pace the runners for their race. "Most of the kids had personal bests," Lytwyn says. "We kept everything the same and the main thing is to have fresh legs." Kopper Kings runner Lyle LeClair placed 14 out of 207 with a time of 18 minutes 15 seconds for juniors. "I was very happy for Lyle," says Lytwyn. "I'd say Lyle has proved himself to me as someone who we will rely on for track season. It was a phenomenal performance." Lytwyn admitted LeClair would place in the top 50 because "if he runs to his ability, he can do it." Lytwyn was also pleased with the performance of the girls. "Michelle has huge potential with distance running in general," says Lytwyn. He explained that Tremblay-Boulianne has the drive and ability to do well, and to him that's all she needs. Tremblay-Boulianne competed in the junior category and placed 42 out of 146 runners with a time of 14 minutes 38 seconds. During zones, which took place in early October, Lytwyn said the girls had great individual efforts. Jeanelle LeClair placed second in the senior category with a time of 16 minutes 48 seconds and Tremblay-Boulianne earned top with a time of 17 minutes 20 seconds. The boys junior team won the zones as Lytwyn says they performed very good. "Next year's crop of JV boys looks good," he says, as he has four runners moving up. "The group coming up from junior high has promising athletes." The rest of the provincial results are as follows: Junior boys - Wesley Gawiak placed 62 with a time of 20 minutes 13 seconds; Ben LeClerc 87 with 21 minutes seven seconds; Dan Bryson 88 in 21 minutes eight seconds; Jaime Lytwyn 118 in 22 minutes 37 seconds; Dillon Gayton 133 in 23 minutes 49 seconds; and Nick Hamilton placing 138 in 23 minutes 58 seconds. Tremblay-Boulianne was the only junior girls participant for the Kopper Kweens. For the senior girls, LeClair finished 55 with a time of 15 minutes three seconds while Heidi Rainville placed 58 in 15 minutes five seconds.
