In her third year of wrestling for the Creighton Kodiaks, Brittney Holland recently placed fifth nationally in her weight class. Competing against 16 other female wrestlers, Holland experienced her toughest competition to date. "I wasn't nervous until I got there," said the soon-to-be Creighton Community School graduate. "Once I saw all the people and I knew I was competing, I got nervous." As the lone wrestler from Creighton to attend the National event, Holland travelled to the Burnaby, B.C., competition with the Junior Huskies from Saskatoon. As a Juvenile wrestler, Holland pinned both competitors in her first two matches. In her first match, she pinned in the first round. In the second match, she pinned in the second round. Her third, and final, match was the toughest. "The first two weren't too bad, but my third match was against some girl from Ontario and she won the Most Outstanding Juvenile Wrestler in Canada," said Holland. With this being her first year at Nationals, Holland only wishes she had another year to compete. But after graduating in June, she will be attending the University of Saskatchewan and will wrestle for the Huskies. Coach Todd Hinds recruited Holland two weeks ago to join the Husky team. "He recruited me and took me out for lunch... and he wants me on the team," said the athlete. As a wrestler for Creighton, Holland has made it the farthest on the competition scale. As the sole athlete to compete in Nationals, she says there haven't been any other wrestlers who have continued past high school, either.
