Creighton School's Junior Varsity basketball team kicked off the season by winning a tournament in The Pas on January 14 and 15. Their first game of the year was against the host from MBCI in The Pas. Creighton came out on the winning side of a 46-27 score. Game two was against Joe A. Ross from OCN, where they won 47-26. Their third game was against their cross-border rivals from Hapnot Collegiate. Again Creighton was victorious, winning 48-28. The game was much closer than the score indicated, but Creighton battled hard down the stretch to pull out the win, which put them in the final against RDPC from Thompson. The final was their only close game of the tournament, where they won 45-41 in a very high-tempo game. "I'm very proud of the boys," said coach Jodi Gray. "They all played real well, and displayed some of the best sportsmanship that I've seen in a long time. Our most improved player in that game was probably Andrew Rachuk, and the leadership of Matt Chambers and Chad March really helped pull the team together. We finally gelled as a team." This weekend, the boys will be going to Portage La Prairie. "Our expectations now are high," said Gray. "We should do quite well." They will play in the Flin Flon tournament at the beginning of February, and head to Roblin on February 11 for a senior varsity tournament. The end of February will take them to Meath Park for another senior tournament. After that, Creighton's junior varsity team will participate in their first district playoff, and hopefully regionals and then Hoopla, which is the Saskatchewan Provincial Championship. "We've only got a grade 9 and 10 team," said Gray. "With us being a young high school, no one knows what we are capable of yet. Hopefully we can surprise some senior teams this year, and let them know that they have a new team to compete with in the North."
