The Creighton Kodiaks basketball team are off to their first Provincial Championship in their first year as a senior team. Ranked #11 in Saskatchewan, the Kodiaks won a wild card berth to the big show in Saskatoon starting this weekend. "It's a big shock and surprise that we ended up getting this wild card spot, mainly because we are a grade 9 and 10 team," said coach Jodi Gray. "If anybody would have told us that we would have ended up going to Provincials at the beginning of the year, I would have laughed at them, because in my eyes we were just too young and inexperienced." Creighton ended the year with a record of 11-9 in tournament play, but were able to beat some of the top teams in Saskatchewan during their run. They will play two games in Saskatoon this weekend, and hopefully advance to the next round. Out of 44 Senior 'A' teams in Saskatchewan, the Kodiaks are gaining recognition for their high ranking with such a young team. On Monday, the team got a mention on Roger's Sportsnet. The host was setting up a story about the Creighton Blue Jays of the NCAA circuit, and said "no, I'm not talking about the basketball team from Creighton, Saskatchewan. "It's nice to get recognized," said Gray. "Jokingly, the word about us is getting out. We've got the support of the entire school. We're getting a lot of congratulations from staff, students and community members. I'd like to thank them for recognizing the time and effort that myself and the boys have put in."
