The planned development of and renovations to sport, culture and recreation facilities throughout Northern Saskatchewan received a tremendous boost in June thanks to a $1,627,000 BUILDING Communities - North investment from the Northern Sport, Culture and Recreation District (NSCRD). ÒSport, culture and recreation brings communities together and provide a wide range of activities for people of all ages,Ó said NSCRD Chairperson Terri-Lynn Beavereye. ÒThis BUILDING Communities - North investment will provide places for those activities to occur and will continue to improve the quality of life for Northerners.Ó In the project development process, potential applicants were asked to engage their residents, examine their programming and minor capital needs while establishing partnerships and plans to meet those needs. The Town of Creighton, which received $125,000, Òwill cover three playground bunks and the Creighton Community CentreÕs flooring and installation costs,Ó says Recreation Director Channa Senyk. And the Village of Denare Beach will be seeing a few upgrades as well as their $120,000 will be going into their Denareplex. Recreation Director Deana Hilchie says improvements will be made to the skate change, weight room and the multipurpose room. The NSCRD received requests for funding that exceeded its resources. The adjudication process selected 20 communities and a variety of projects to receive financial support. As a funding partner, the NSCRD will continue to work with the applicants to bring the projects to completion. Last November, an additional four communities received $400,000 for projects critical to operating winter programs. The BUILDING Communities - North Program is providing over $2 million for minor capital projects to enhance the sport, culture and recreation facilities. With the initial support of the Ministry of Tourism, Parks, Culture and Sport the Northern Sport, Culture and Recreation District established the program to encourage community collaboration and planning for sustainable facilities in communities throughout the north. The Northern Sport, Culture and Recreation District, with its membership of First Nations and Communities throughout the north, is one of nine Ònot-for-profitÓ sport, culture and recreation districts in the province and the only one with the support of the Ministry for this type of capital program.
