Ryan Trumbley was honoured as the NESSAC Male Coach of the Year for Saskatchewan high schools. Trumbley coached senior girls in both volleyball and basketball earlier this season and can now be found outside teaching senior track and field for the Creighton Kodiaks. News came to Trumbley last week of his honour Ð a first time recipient of the award. "I was very honoured. I really wasn't expecting it at all," he said. Coming from a small school, Trumbley says often there isn't much recognition at Creighton Community School. "I'm definitely honoured and humbled." Trumbley was one of roughly 250 nominees throughout Saskatchewan. He doesn't take the credit himself, though, as the winner. "I had a really luck year. You can't win an award like this without the support of the school," he said. The coach said a lot of having a great team is not just the team themselves, but the school behind them. Trumbley says being given the opportunity to attend coaching clinics, use the gymnasium for practices and attending out of town tournaments is big for the team. But, of course, having the athletes he does doesn't hurt either. "I have a great group of female athletes that worked their butts off for me," he said, in regards to volleyball, basketball and now track and field. "The reason we had the success we did was because they put the work in they did." The senior girls volleyball and basketball teams both brought home gold in the conferences this year. It takes more than one person to win this award, said the coach. "When you win an individual award like this, it's definitely a team award," Trumbley said. As well, Trumbley credits his success to Jason Straile Ð Creighton Community School's Athletic Director. Through Straile, teams are able to attend more tournaments, conferences and events. "He makes sure our sports teams get every opportunity. "We're not hampered by living in the North. He makes sure that we get every opportunity available to us," said Trumbley. Along with Straile, Trumbley says the School Division and administration make it possible for the teams to compete as they do.
