Submitted Article The 22nd annual Cranberry Portage Trout Challenge is fast approaching with the event taking place July 29 through to July 31. Past participants have probably already received their entry brochure in the mail and are in the process of registering. The early bird deadline was July 21 Ð any teams registered on or before this date will be eligible to win a cash prize. If you have never fished in this tournament maybe this is the year for you to hit Lake Athapapuskow to compete for the coveted Trout Challenge trophy and the guaranteed first, second and third place cash prizes Ð $3,500, $2,500 and $2,000 respectively. Teams four through 10 will also take away their share of the prize money, which is generated through the $150 entry fee and returned back to the participants in full. In addition to this, there will once again be prizes for the largest fish caught on each day of the tournament, a hard luck prize and numerous other fun prizes. One of the great things about this tournament is you don't have to place in the top 10 to walk away with a prize. Great prizes Once again we have many great sponsors Ð which mean we have a lot of great prizes. The annual Boat Parade will commence at 7 p.m. Friday, July 30. The parade will begin and end at the Cranberry Portage Arena. Come and check out the boats and catch some candy! All anglers who participate in the parade will be eligible for a cash prize. The rules meeting will be held immediately following the boat parade to brief the anglers, provide them with a map of the fishing area, and answer any questions they may have. Then to reward the anglers for sitting through the rules meeting, we are having a social that includes snacks, refreshments and raffles with some excellent prizes such as rod and reel packages, fishing/outdoor gear and much more! The shot gun start can be seen from Big Dock at 8 a.m. both days. Safety The boats will be divided into two heats for safety reasons. The first 30 boats to enter the tournament will be allowed to go in the first heat both days! The battle for the best fishing spot is quite the sight to see. Boats must return by 4:30 p.m. Saturday and 3:30 p.m. Sunday. Teams submit four pictures each day, which the picture committee reviews. The fish lengths over the two days are totalled and the team with greatest total length emerges as the champions. All you need is a boat, camera and a buddy. Presentations to winning teams will be made at approximately 6 p.m., Sunday ,August 6 at the Cranberry Portage Beach Side Park. Come and enjoy the weekend at the local campground or at the beach. There are picnic grounds, play equipment and a six-hole pitch and putt right here and available for family fun. See you there!
