Kelly Carrington Staff Writer Nearly 400 athletes, as of last Thursday afternoon, were confirmed to compete in the 38th Annual Frontier Games 2012. Frontier School Division, covering two-thirds of the province, will have athletes from grades 5 to 9 competing in a variety of events this weekend. The events range from classic winter sports to traditional events such as trap-setting. The venue for the annual event changes yearly, usually between Cranberry Portage and Norway House. With Cranberry Portage being one of the larger locations in the Frontier School Division, the community will open its doors for the weekend-long competition. Athletes from across Frontier School Division will be housed at the Frontier Collegiate residence, while others will stay in classrooms between Cranberry Portage Elementary School and Frontier Collegiate. Frontier Collegiate Institute principal Dodie Johnston says she's looking forward to the upcoming events. Johnston, along with a committee, have been planning the Games and gathering volunteers to make sure the events run smoothly. This year, the trap-setting event will be judged by Natural Resources officers, 'which is pretty fitting,' said Johnston. The Frontier Games will start with the opening ceremonies Wednesday night with floor hockey and basketball to follow. Thursday, athletes will compete in badminton, trap-setting, table tennis, archery, skiing, snowshoeing, basketball and floor hockey. On Friday, athletes will compete in many of the same events before ending the night with awards and a dance. The Games will feature guest speaker Tara Lacquette of the Manitoba Bison. Lacquette is a former Frontier student and competed in the Frontier Games' floor hockey events.
