The 17th annual Cranberry Portage Trout Challenge is fast approaching! Past participants have probably received their entry brochure in the mail and in the process of registering for Aug. 5-6. The Early Bird deadline is today. Any teams registered on or before this date will be eligible for a cash prize. If you have never fished in this tournament, maybe this is the year for you to hit Lake Athapapuskow to compete for the coveted Trout Challenge trophy and the guaranteed first, second and third place cash prizes - $3,500, $2,500 and $2,000 respectively. Teams four through 10 will also take away their share of the prize money which is generated through the $150 team entry fee and turned back to the participants in full. In addition to this, there will be prizes for the largest fish caught each day of the tournament Ð a hard luck prize Ð and numerous other fun prizes. One of the great things about this tournament is you don't have to place in the top 10 to walk away with a prize. We have many great sponsors Ð which means we have a lot of great prizes. The annual Boat Parade will commence at 7 p.m. Friday, August 4. The parade will begin and end at the Cranberry Portage Arena. Come and check out the boats and catch some candy! All anglers that participate in the parade will be eligible for a cash prize. The rules meeting will be held immediately following the boat parade to brief the anglers, provide them with a map of the fishing area, and answer questions they may have. To reward the anglers for sitting through the rules meeting, we are having a social that includes snacks, refreshments and raffles with some excellent prizes such as rod and reel packages, Lund gear and much more. The shot gun start can be seen from "Big Dock" at 8 a.m. both days. The boats will be divided in to two heats for safety reasons. The first 30 boats to enter the tournament will be allowed to go in the first heat both days! The battle for the best fishing spot is quite a sight. Boats must return by 4:30 p.m. Saturday and 3:30 p.m. Sunday. Teams submit four Polaroid pictures each day which the picture committee reviews. The fish lengths over the two days are totaled and the team with the longest total emerges as champions. Any teams wishing to enter in this years Trout Challenge Tournament can contact Barry Anderson at 472-3044, Martin Ouellet at 472-3406 or Kori/Rob James at 472-3673. All you need is a boat, Polaroid camera and a buddy. Presentations to winning teams will be made at approximately 6 p.m., Sunday, August 6 at the Cranberry Portage Beach Side Park. This is open to everybody. Come and enjoy the weekend at the local campground or at the beach. There are picnic grounds, play equipment and a six-hole pitch and putt right here and available for family fun. See you there! Participants please be advised that Lake Athapap will be closed to all competitors from noon Friday, August 4 until the start of the tournament on Saturday August 5.
