The first reading to allow all-terrain vehicles (ATVs) to operate in town was passed unanimously at last week's city council meeting. ATV enthusiasts approached the city in hopes of having certain roads available to get past city limits without having to use a trailer. On a trial basis only, the first reading was passed with the second and final readings expected to be passed June 2 at the council meeting. "We're really hoping that the ATVers, for a good part, will use the peer pressure and police themselves," said Coun. Cal Huntley, "because it's up to them how well this works." With the second and third readings coming up, rules on a curfew will also be decided. Coun. George Fontaine said the police will not be able to keep all ATVers in check, so it will be up to the public. According to Mayor Tom Therien, the ATV group that requested the routes is pleased with council's move. But they are also aware that "we can certainly take it away" if there are problems. As well, Coun. Fontaine encouraged parents of children with ATVs to be aware of how their kids are behaving while riding. With parents watching their children, the ATV group will be keeping an eye out for issues as well. Describing the motion as "good for the community and good for ATVers," Mayor Therien said "It would be nice to see it stay around." Coun. Karen MacKinnon added that it's hoped the access routes will cut down on speeding by ATVers, who will no longer have to fear being caught driving within city limits. The following routes will be excluded from ATV use: HWY 10 HWY 10A Main Street First Avenue - Hill Street - Callinan Street South Ross Street Hudson Street South Hudson Street Green Street Channing Drive Church Street Hapnot Street - Churchill Avenue Fourth Avenue - Bellvue Avenue South - Ross Street Queen Street (from Pine Avenue) - wallace Avenue - Phelan Avenue - Wright Avenue Ð With notes from Jonathon Naylor.
