Canadian Breast Cancer Foundation (CBCF) -Prairies/NWT Region honoured their volunteers Friday night with the third annual volunteer appreciation event where the Flin Flon Bonspiel Committee won the Group Volunteer Award. ÒThe Group Volunteer award is designed to recognize those third party event organizers who use innovation in design and execution of an event,Ó said CBCF volunteer services manager, Shelley Braiden. From March 9-11, 2007, the Flin Flon Curling Club celebrated their 75th Anniversary and decided to think pink while doing it. They hosted a Brave the Shave where eight volunteers brave the shavers helped raise over $30,000. The staging of this event had a significant impact in the Flin Flon community. It also acted as the kick off for the Brave the Shave at the World WomenÕs Hockey Championship on April 7, 2007 in Winnipeg, where it took 21 brave the shavers to reach the same fundraising total. Marlene Gogal from the Flin Flon Bonspiel Committee said Òthe success of our event is a testament to the heart and strength in our community. To be able to participate in such an inspiring event is rewarding in itself.Ó This year, 22,400 women and 170 men are expected to be diagnosed with breast cancer in Canada.
