Compiled by Kelly Carrington The University of New Brunswick Varsity Reds have captured the 2013 University Cup and 11 Canadian Junior Hockey League alumni became CIS National Champions. On March 17, the No. 2 seed UNB shut out the No. 4 seed Saint Mary's University 2-0 at Saskatoon's Credit Union Centre to earn their fifth CIS University Cup. UNB finished the tournament with a perfect 3-0 record. Flin Flon Bombers head coach and GM Mike Reagan visited the Varsity Reds this time last year as he looked for coaching tips and inspiration from bench boss Gardiner MacDougall. This year, the Bombers are looking to claim the Bauer Conference title in a post-season series against the Humboldt Broncos. For the Varsity Reds, CJHL alumnus and former Wellington Duke goaltender Daniel LaCosta was perfect in net, stopping all 17 shots he faced in the final game. LaCosta, a native of Labrador City, Newfoundland and Labrador, earned his first shutout of the tournament and was named to the 2013 University Cup All-Tournament Team. Making up the CJHL Alumni and 2013 University Cup were: Tim Priamo, Burlington Cougars, OJHL Bryce Swan, Amherst Ramblers, MHL Colby Pridham, Charlottetown Abbies, MHL Ben Wright, Brooks Bandits, AJHL Adrian Robertson, Mississauga Chargers, OJHL Stefan Salituro, Pembroke Lumber Kings / St. Michael's Buzzers / Vaughan Vipers, CCHL / OJHL Dion Campbell, Yorkton Terriers / Melville Millionaires, SJHL Travis Fullerton, Moncton Gagnon Beavers, MHL Daniel LaCosta, Wellington Dukes, OJHL Jon Waye, Amherst Ramblers / Dieppe Commandos, MHL Charles Lavigne, Hawkesbury Hawks, CCHL In total, 62 players on the tournament's rosters were alumni of the CJHL, including 13 members of the St Mary's University Huskies and 11 from UNB. Each season hundreds of CJHL players and alumni commit to universities and colleges on both sides of the Canada-US border.
