After receiving a school assignment, a 13-year-old girl from Oakville, Ont., decided to help the Canadian Athletes for the Olympics. After watching the 2006 Winter Olympics, Holly MicudaÕs new fascination began. ÒI decided to sell wristbands to support the Canadian Athletes,Ó she says on a promotional poster. ÒI really enjoyed watching the 2006 Olympics on TV and I really enjoy playing sports myself.Ó With her assignment giving her instructions to create a project based on the Olympics, the Our Lady Of Peace student decided to sell wristbands around her town and school. ÒI started by selling 300 wristbands at my school, and I have sold over 25,000 across Canada,Ó read the poster. Money raised from the fundraiser goes to the Canada Athletes Now Fund, which directly supports the countryÕs athletes. ÒMy principal, teacher and whole school have been very supportive of my idea,Ó wrote the teen. ÒMy goal is to sell 500,000 wristbands.Ó With a mixture of red and white, the wristband reads ÒCanadian Athletes NowÓ on the outside, while the inside offers words of encouragement that Micuda came up with: ÒDonÕt just hope theyÕll win, help them win.Ó For the last year and a half, the wristbands have been on sale at various times in the city. Recreation Director Brenda Russell says with the Summer Olympics fast approaching, the wristbands are on sale once again. ÒItÕs a great opportunity for local residents to support our 2008 Olympic Team with all the excitement with the Olympics and the opportunity to watch the coverage on TV, this is a great idea,Ó says Russell ÒPick up your wristbands before it starts on August 8. ItÕs for a good cause.Ó Russell notes that this is a great idea and itÕs the Òcommunity's own way of supporting the athletes.Ó In Flin Flon wristbands can be picked up at City Hall at the front desk. But it isnÕt just the City who is selling the promotional items. Cinniplex movie theatres, in Ontario, have taken on the challenge of selling 125,000 wristbands as a promotion for the Olympics as well. With these initiatives, Micuda is roughly half way to her goal. ÒThis is Flin FlonÕs opportunity to help her reach her goal,Ó noted Russell. About 200 wristbands are left at City Hall, which Russell says will be sold on a Òfirst come, first serve base.Ó For more information on the wristbands, visit www.canadianathletesnow.ca
