The City of Flin Flon's recreation department is asking the public to be patient over the next week to allow crews to finish flooding the outdoor rinks. "Our goal is to have as many of the rinks as we can flooded in time for the Christmas break," said Brenda Russell, recreation director. "We are asking that adults and children do not go on the flooded rinks until they are well froze. We're asking for everyone's cooperation, so we can get the flooding done as quickly as possible." When people walk across the ice before it is ready, it makes more unnecessary work for the crews, and delays the process by a couple of days. The weather has also imposed some challenges. When it is -30C, crews can't use the hydrants. When there is a blizzard like last weekend, crews have to spend more time clearing the snow off. This week, the weather has been perfect, although -4C is borderline for freezing. There are a total of seven outdoor rinks in Flin Flon, including the new facility on Creekside. Remember that it is the neighbourhood's responsibility for clearing the snow off the rinks once they have been flooded and the ice is ready. "We would like to thank everyone for their cooperation, and encourage everyone to get out and enjoy the rinks," said Russell.
