Running like a girl never sounded so good. The first thing that often comes to mind is a young boy teasing another young boy. But that's not this case at McIsaac School Ecole McIsaac. Girls, from Grade 2 through to Grade 6, have started running under the direction of Patty Korchinski. After teaching the sport at Hapnot Collegiate, Korchinski decided to introduce running, as a sport, at the middle school level. Run Like A Girl is a running program that began in March at McIsaac School Ecole McIsaac. "We started and ran all of March and all of April," said Korchinski. The girls run twice a week after school in the Birchview area. "I do some coaching at Hapnot," she said, noting that she has a daughter at McIsaac. "I thought they could use a running group over there." Recently, the group hosted a Mom Run, which allowed mothers to join their daughters in their exercise. On Wednesday, to end out the season, the group will be holding a Family Run. Parents, grand parents, brothers and sisters are invited to this fun event. "It's important to see their parents being active along with them," said Korchinski. For the first day, there was only interest from four runners. But, as the time went on, the numbers soon doubled. Korchinski says on a an average day, there are 10 girls who run. As far as she knows, this is the first time a program like this has been offered at the school. "Next year, if we do it again, I hope to see more people come out." As well as Korchinski, Caitlin Davidson and Courtney Quinn, of Hapnot Collegiate, helped with the running group. Starting out in the Birchview area, Korchinski says every week the girls shave off some time and add a few more steps. "I think it's awesome having young girls fit and active," she said. As well as being active, she said it was a great for the girls to be a part of a group. "Be fit, be active," she said. "If you feel better physically, you feel better about your self in general and you might gain some confidence along the way," she said. In part with the Family Run, Nutritionist JoAnna Ledoux will be helping to provide information on healthy eating for the girls and their families.
