Hockey Manitoba has announced that the Winnipeg Region has been awarded the 'AAA' Midget Regional Championship's scheduled for April 7 ? 10, 2005. Hockey Northwestern Ontario, Saskatchewan the Manitoba Provincial Champion along with a host team will compete for the opportunity to represent the West Region at the National Midget tournament scheduled April 18 ? 24, 2005 in Gateneau, Quebec. The Brandon 'AAA' Midget Wheat Kings are the current defending National Champions. The tournament is annually rotated between Manitoba, Saskatchewan and Northwestern Ontario with Manitoba and Saskatchewan holding it twice each every five years while Northwestern Ontario hosts the event once during the same period. Manitoba has hosted several successful tournaments that include Steinbach (2002), Souris (2000), Arborg (1997). Winnipeg lasted hosted the event in 1994. Hockey Manitoba evaluated applications from five different representatives that included Brandon, Norman, Morden, Central Plains and Winnipeg. The quality of the applications and commitment demonstrated from each group made the selection extremely difficult but the selection committee is confident the Winnipeg Region will host an outstanding tournament. Brian Franklin, Chairman of the Host Selection Committee was very impressed with the quality of bids and exclaimed, "The committee was very impressed with the bids and the time and energy that each group invested. I am sorry that the event could not be shared with all bid applicants but I am hoping that each group will provide their collective support and now get behind the Winnipeg Region. Hockey Manitoba is looking forward to a strong tournament and I am certain we will be well represented."7/27/2004
