Creighton’s Zach Garrett enjoyed the nine games he was on the ice with the Flin Flon Bombers during the 2013 to 2015 seasons.
“It was nice playing for Flin Flon,” Garrett said. “Growing up there, it was my dream to play for them. Also it was nice to get to play in front of family and friends that I hadn’t played in front of for years.”
Now 21 and aged out of Junior A, Garrett continues to be a star with the Tri-Town Thunder, the Junior B team he has played with since 2012.
The 6-foot-1, 185-pound forward leads the Prairie Junior Hockey League with 34 goals in 31 games. He is ninth in the PJHL scoring race with 56 points.
“Zach has a great skill set package: a very hard, quick shot, a great puck handler, very good skater and one of the hardest hitters on the team,” Thunder head coach Randy Cuthill said. “Besides Zach’s elite offensive skills, he is one of our best forecheckers and penalty killers.”
When asked about his success this season, Garrett – who had 70 points and 26 goals in 37 games last season – praised his teammates.
“Our team this year has a ton of speed and skill, plus my linemates and teammates are smart and creative,” Garrett said. “It makes it easy to play with them and create offence with.”
He has greatly enjoyed his now four seasons with the Thunder, who are based in Carrot River, Zenon Park and Arborfield, Saskatchewan.
“The best part of playing for the Thunder is the community,” Garrett said. “I enjoy being a role model for the young children around Carrot River. I also like how the people in town take an interest in how we are doing and generally care about how we do.”
In addition to spending time with the Bombers, Garrett played a couple of games with the Waywayseecappo Wolverines of the Manitoba Junior Hockey League.
“Both experiences were a privilege and made me a better player on the ice,” said Garrett, who hopes to possibly mix playing hockey with going to school next season.
