The University of Alberta – Augustana  men’s hockey team will look a lot different next season when Flin Flon’s Tanner Korchinski is no longer in the lineup.

The former Flin Flon Bombers blueliner is now in his fifth and final season with the Vikings. He is pursuing a degree in environmental studies.

“Tanner Korchinski has been a consistent top-four defenceman for our program throughout his five years here at the U of A – Augustana,” Augustana head coach Blaine Gusdal said. “He is currently one of our [assistant] captains and we will miss his leadership, calm-under-pressure demeanour and incredible skill set.”

This season Korchinski leads Vikings defencemen with 10 points. He has scored five goals and recorded five assists.

“Tanner’s on-ice strengths would be his very complete skill-set,” Gusdal said. “He is an incredibly fluent skater who can carry the puck end to end, he’s got a pro shot from the point, plus he has a great feel for the game in important situations.

“His leadership and experience have also helped him develop these skills, to where he has become an even more dependable, consistent defenseman at the university level.”

Korchinski played three games as a 17-year-old for the Bombers before suiting up for his hometown team from 2008 through 2011.

In his final season, 2010-2011, he had 37 points and 77 penalty minutes in 55 games.
