Although Darryl Dickson helped the Flin Flon Bombers win the 1993 Saskatchewan Junior Hockey League championship, he is perhaps now best known for his work on the gridiron.
The principal at the Wakaw (Sask.) School has been coaching football for the past 16 years. He coaches three teams per year – with players ranging all of the way from grade 5 to grade 12.
In addition to coaching and being an educator, the Hudson Bay, Sask. product keeps busy with his wife, Sara Jane, and their two young children: Piper, 2, and Barclay, nine months.
Dickson suited up for the Bombers from 1991 to 1994. During the 1992-93 campaign, Flin Flon went 35-23-6. A strong playoff run netted the team the SJHL championship over Melville. The Bombers then knocked off the Manitoba Junior Hockey League’s Dauphin Kings to win the Anavet Cup.
The latter earned the Bombers a berth in Canada’s national Junior A championship, then called the Centennial Cup, which was hosted in Amherst, NS.
“The fans liked a physical style of play and that suited how I like to play,” Dickson said of his days with the Bombers.
After his time in Flin Flon, Dickson played a couple seasons of hockey at Brandon University. He then embarked on a career as an administrator and educator in Saskatchewan that took him to Pierceland, Canora (for 11 years), Watson, Cudworth, and now Wakaw.
During his time in education, Dickson has coached hockey, football, volleyball, basketball, badminton, track and field, and cross-country running.
