Compiled by Kelly Carrington Close to 100 paddlers enjoyed the Flin Flon Trout Festival's canoeing events on Ross Lake. Three events were held last Saturday, June 30, for tandem canoes, and eight teams competed in the voyageur canoes. Brett and John Belfry came in first place in the Men's Open as Larry Schroeder and Dean Grove picked up second place. Third place went to Gord Halpin and Terry Anderson as Gregory and Michael Vettese earned fourth place. Fifth and sixth place went to Roderick Campbell and Dean Grindle, and Grant Willey and Joey Rideout. For the Ladies' Open it was Flora Staple and Jessie Campbell, who scooped up first place with Cindi Lee and Marla Fontaine in second place. Ronna Whitbread and Patty Evans came in third place as Tiffany Anderson and Brenda Chrupalo earned fourth. Linda Clark and Nora Fontaine picked up fifth place in the Ladies' Open. It was Gord Halpin and Penny Grove who picked up first place in the Mixed Open as 10 teams entered their names. Patty Evans and Dean Grindle paddled to second place with Dean Grove and Jessie Campbell in third. Fourth place went to Bria Gale and Brett Belfry, with fifth place going to Jan Modler and Roger Gregoire. Rod Campbell and Flora Staple picked up sixth place as Ronna Whitebread and Joey Rideout earned seventh place. The final three places went to Cindi and Carson Lee, Miles Blatherwick and Nora Fontaine, and Linda Clark and Maguire Lee. The Voyageur Canoe Challenge had bragging rights going to the Big Island Bears, with the Denare Beach Yacht and Cattlemen's Association finished just one second behind. The Explorers picked up third place in the challenge with Team Roger Gregoire earning fourth. The Birch Lake Sasquatches came in fifth as Party Piranhas were sixth. Seventh place went to Super K with the Explorers 2 picking up eighth place.
