For the second year in a row, big bucks are up for grabs at the Trout Festival Canoeing Challenge. The event will take place on Ross Lake, Saturday, July 3. There are six races to enter, with cash prizes for first to fourth place in five races, and an additional prize for the final race. Starting at Stittco Energy, all events are about 1.5 km with one left hand buoy turn. The first race will be an open race for anyone 18 and under at 1 p.m. At 1:30 p.m. will be the Ladies Open (any age). The Men's Open will start at 2 p.m. A Parent/Child race (child must be 16 or under) will take place at 2:30, followed by a Timed Canoeing Skills Course at 3 p.m., involving tight turns around four buoys on a short course. The final event at 4 p.m. will be a Canoe Poker Derby. Paddlers travel to pick up a poker hand. It is not a race, just a chance to take a leisurely ride in a large canoe with family or friends. Cash prizes totaling $500 have been donated by Molson's. Special guest and local paddling legend, Norm Crerar will also be in attendance.
